Disk Injuries

Your body has many spinal discs. They are in between each individual vertebrae in your back and neck, the soft gel like interiors create a cushion between your bones. The disks act as shock absorbers for your body when there is an impact. When you have pain in one or more of your discs, it can have a detrimental impact on your daily activities. Some of the symptoms of disk injuries are having a hard time sleeping, damaged mobility, inability to work, muscle weakness and pain that can radiate throughout your body.

Here are some of the disc injuries that you may be dealing with:

1) Herniated Disc Or Slipped Disc-This is a very common type of disc injuries. A herniated disc the soft material inside the disc pushes through into the toughest exterior. This can cause nerve irritation and causes pain and a variety of other symptoms. Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary for each individual to the next, but most people have the following symptoms: arm pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling, weakness. There can also be many reasons that you get a herniated disc, it could be that you lifted something improperly, aging, traumatic events like falling. There are many treatment options of a herniated disc with non-surgical treatments such as: hot and cold therapy, acupuncture, over the counter medication, physical therapy, steroid injections, and yoga. In some rare cases, surgery may be needed to get relief from the herniated disc and its associated pain.
2) Pinched Nerve- A herniated disc is one of the most common causes of a pinched nerve. Some symptoms of a pinched nerve are muscle weakness, numbness, sharp pain along nerve, and limbs falling asleep.  A pinched nerve can be caused by a variety of things, including: hobbies, herniated disc, bone spurs, injuries, obesity, repetitive motions. There are a few things that help alleviate these symptoms, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, and sometimes surgery is needed to address the root of the pain.

3) Bulging Disc- A bulging disc is a bulge along the circumference of one of your discs, but the membrane has not ruptured, so no soft substance has broken through. These bulges are often along the rear and side portions of your discs, placing pressure on the nerve thus creating pain. A bulging disc may include burning, heaviness, numbness, pain , tingling and weakness. Sometimes the location of your bulge means that your symptoms will be different than normal. Conventional treatments for bulging discs are less engagement of physical activities, not lifting heavy objects, hot and cold therapy, lifestyle changes, rest and weight loss.
